What is the difference between specifications and specs? A specification provides a set of rules or guidelines for a particular topic. Specifications are usually written down and shared among the entire group of people that they’re intended for. The spec is typically the part of a document that provides the rules for what all the rest of the document is supposed to do.

The problem with specs is that there are so many of them that they can be difficult to find. There are so many different “standards” for everything, it can be hard to suss out which one is which and which version of something is which. Also, what the heck is a “spec”? I know I’m only going to get a couple of paragraphs in here, but basically, the W3C (the W3C of HTML) has provided us with a set of standards for the world’s web. As a point of reference, here’s the W3C’s list of the most common HTML standards.

HTML stands for Hyper Text Markup Language. The W3C has developed the specifications for almost everything from the way text is composed to the way we display the text. The HTML standards were set down over the last two years as a result of a very successful effort by a group of volunteer webmasters. They spent a lot of time on what they called “the W3C group” and then they decided to make the group itself a committee.

The HTML group includes a variety of volunteers who write the various specs (called “drafts”) as well as a small group of volunteers who verify the specs within the group. The group even has its own mailing list with the goal of communicating with the group to keep the specs up to date.

There are multiple standards bodies for HTML but the ones that are the most widely used and adopted are the W3C and the W3C Working Group. As it turns out, the W3C has a different focus each year, with this being year three. The HTML group is a lot smaller but it is a lot more active. It has a mailing list which meets every week once everyone has agreed to join.

Each group is overseen by a working group which helps to keep the spec current with what is being proposed. This is where the W3C gets it’s name from. The Working Group is in charge of proposing what features W3C standards are going to include. As the name suggests, the W3C is the governing body of HTML standards.

The W3C is not an organization that has a long history. In fact, it wasn’t even created until 1992. It started out as another group called the World Wide Web Consortium. The W3C has been doing this for years, but it started to get a name in 1996 when it was decided to use the acronym W3C for its mailing list.

The W3C was created in order to help decide which standards would be included in the next version of HTML. This version of HTML is what Google uses to display the web in its search results.
