The idea of ‘value’ is a pretty abstract concept, so it’s easy to get lost in all the buzz surrounding it. When you are trying to decide whether to spend more money on a product, you can spend a lot of time thinking about what the value of it is and then decide whether to invest in it. But for many people, the idea of value can be difficult to understand.
You might think that there is one right answer to the question of what the value of something is. But for most people, they aren’t sure if the value of something is something that can be quantified, or just something that exists in some abstract space. It is important to try to understand the meaning of what value is, so that you can decide on a more effective and efficient way of using your money.
This is what I do. I look at the word ‘value’ as a concept. I study the way you use the word. I take it apart and put it back together. I try to make it as simple as possible.
You can’t just put a value on something and then expect people to understand it. Some people are naturally good at looking at words and figures and trying to grasp the concept of them. But many people are not. So to get people used to thinking about values, I try to teach them to use the word value in a way that makes sense to them. I try to teach them how to see the words that they’re using in a new way.
Value as in “value of something”. Or “value of something is as good as”. Or “I value you more than you value yourself.” These are all really good ways to think about the concept of value. We get confused with a lot of things because we don’t know exactly what value to put on something. Sometimes it’s worth nothing at all. Sometimes it’s worth a great deal of value.
One of my favorite books on value theory is John Lasseter’s value theory textbook, Value Theory: A Primer for Practitioners. I’ve read through it a couple of times. It’s worth reading again. John Lasseter is a famous director who is famous for creating the Pixar movie Cars. I was lucky enough to have a chance to see him speak the other day and he was a great speaker.
Lasseter is the guy who invented the character of value, a concept that is important to value theory. Value is the value to someone. Value is the value of a car. Value is the value of your car. Value is the value of your house. Value is the value of your money. Value is the value of your computer. Value is the value of your person. Value is the value of your dog.
In short, value is the value of everything you do. So in Cars, Lasseter’s character has a car that he wants. He wants to get a car. He wants to get a house. He wants to get a computer. He wants to get a person. In Cars, Lasseter created a car that has a value. It’s a car that can help him achieve his goal. In Cars, Lasseter created a house that has a value.
