I like to think of myself as a kernel rather than an operating system. My thoughts and actions are always focused on the goals we are trying to achieve. My decisions are always based on the way things are going to be in the future. When I see the world around me, I use the kernel. When I am thinking about something, I use the operating system.
The kernel is the foundation of all computers, and it’s what allows them to interact with each other. The operating system is a program that makes the kernel run, and it manages the user and system processes. Of course, the kernel and the operating system are completely separate. The kernel is what makes computers work, and the operating system controls processes that the user can access. Think of it as a sort of “brain” within the computer.
The kernel is the thing that runs the software, the operating system is the thing that runs the hardware. You can think of the software as the front end, and the hardware as the back end.
The operating system is just a bunch of programs and hardware. The kernel is the part that manages the program execution and the hardware is the logic that determines what you do with your computer.

Suffice it to say that the kernel is the part that has to run on the hardware and the operating system is the part that runs on the software, the front end. If you’re not the front end, like me, then you’re probably not involved with kernel vs. operating system.

However, it is a topic that has many sides; some people are kernel experts, others are operating system experts. One of the most important topics that both sides of the kernel vs. operating system debate have in common is that they all have an enormous amount of data that they have to process.
The one area that both sides have in common is that in order to be able to understand how a program is doing, you need to know the processes that it is running at the same time. For example, if you are a kernel expert, you would know that in order to be able to read a program’s memory, you need to know what programs and other applications are running using it.
This is where operating systems (OS) come in. They are the software that controls how we use our computers. If you can’t understand how OS’s work, then you can’t be able to perform certain tasks or even control some of the things that your computer does. The term “OS” is almost synonymous with the concept of “programs,” but the vast majority of OSs are written by programmers, so there is no real distinction.
The kernel is the part of Linux that runs the operating system or kernel. You can run the Linux kernel and see how it works. The OS is a whole bunch of programs that do things like create the graphical user interface and the input/output devices.

If you’re familiar with Unix or Windows, you might be surprised to hear that Linux is a much simpler and more straightforward operating system. The kernel is responsible for much of the interface between user and computer and it also controls the vast majority of the computer’s processes and interactions too.
