This is a very promising new direction for the world of data science, but it sure beats the hell out of the “I have a PhD and I am going to work for Google” mentality.

I like this idea because it shows data scientists are not only not afraid to make dumb mistakes and get burned by the results, but they’re also not afraid to learn from it and improve. The problem is that the way we train data scientists is to get them to sit in front of a computer and take a bunch of courses, then take a bunch of tests, and then take a bunch of exams with the goal of becoming a data scientist.

My impression is that most data scientists don’t really care that much about learning, and if there is a course you can take to become one, you could just as easily take it to pass a test. However, I am sure there are some data scientists that do take an interest in learning. That interest can be a good thing. It can make you a better data scientist. It can also make you a worse data scientist.

You know what you’re doing is a lot easier with a pencil and paper. If you want to become a data scientist, you can always take a class to learn how to do some of the things I mentioned. But you can also just do something to test the waters.

I don’t know about you, but I have a better way to learn data science. And the best way to learn data science is by doing it. Take a class, take a class. But if you just want to try it out, go to the cloud. There is no such thing as “getting it right.” The best way to learn about data science is by doing it.
